Global Sustainability Perspective

What more appropriate launch topic could there be for our new Global Sustainability website than the Copenhagen Summit. This meeting had an array of global leaders in one city with one aim - to make this UN climate conference the turning point in the control of the world's carbon emissions. While the brevity of the summit's outcome, the Copenhagen Accord, suggests that the conference did not achieve all of its objectives, what is widely accepted is that this event has acted as a catalyst for most Governments to define and pursue their carbon reduction strategies.  This will be particularly clear once individual country emission targets are defined in January 2010.

Given the importance of the real estate sector as a source of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions, the outcome of Copenhagen is likely to lead to a focus on policy and legislative approaches to address the climate change impact of the built environment.  As the dust settles from the Copenhagen summit, we will try to unravel the potential implications, both costs and benefits, for real estate markets around the world.  Additional analysis will be provided in early 2010.
